In some cases, the ability for a friendship to not waver despite not checking in with a person for an extended period of time can serve as a testament to it’s strength. 

But sometimes we hesitate seeing how a person is doing to avoid prying or being annoying but on the flip side, sometimes… people are just dying to be heard and would love to be asked. It’s always nice being asked and quite rarely will the person react untoward…
